Why do stormtroopers wear armor

The armor also protects the trooper from blaster bolts by dispersing the heat from the bolt, often leaving them incapacitated but alive or entirely unimpeded. The answer to that question has less to do with the armor than it does the blasters themselves. Standard Rebel weapons are described as being able to pierce armor, even on their lowest power settings. Because of their effectiveness against stormtroopers, the Empire made them illegal to own. Storm troopers we see are usually facing the most well armed and supplied adversaries they will fight. This added piece of armor brings with it added mobility restriction, but shows the price they are willing to pay to be ruthless tool in assuring the Empire's rule across the galaxy.

Given how Stormtrooper training can be vigorous and robust, it's no surprise that they are excellent athletes. Yet, even with all that athletic prowess and years of instruction, there are limitations. One such limitation is mobility, as Stormtrooper armor is clearly a detriment.

To offset this, Stormtrooper armor is created knowing that at some point the wearer will take a hit. Thus, the armor was designed to withstand and deflect blaster fire. Unlike a regular plate, the Stormtrooper armor will effectively absorb a blast and dissipate it. This spreads out the concussive force of the blast across a wider area, lessening its deadliness and providing the trooper a greater chance of survival.

While we know that Stormtrooper armor is designed to dissipate and deflect blaster fire, that doesn't mean the soldier under the armor couldn't use a bit of added protection. Knowing that a direct hit is almost always fatal, the Empire designed Stormtrooper armor with reinforced chest plates, allowing them to withstand additional damage. From a tactical point of view this would make even more sense, as many times Stormtrooper battalions are dispatched in mass force, completely sweeping the area.

One disadvantage of such a strategy is the exposure of the soldiers. Thus, knowing your soldiers might be exposed and literally lined up one next to the other, it probably a good idea to give them a bit of added protection in the most probable strike point. One of the more iconic images to come from the prequel trilogy where the destroyer droids. The ball shaped Droidekas had a high degree of mobility and an imposing arsenal of weapons with their twin blasters.

They were also incredibly difficult to defeat as they were equipped with personal deflector shield generators.

Seeing what an imposing force these droids were, the Empire equipped certain Stormtrooper squads with built-in shield projectors as well. Usually not seen in squads assigned to close quarter scenarios, Stormtroopers whose mission involved large scale assaults with a varying degree of space between soldiers could utilize their shield generators to protect themselves and create an overlapping defensive arrangement.

One of the great advantages of Mandalorian armor was the amount of information that the wearer had during battle. Naturally, when creating the Clone armor and then Stormtrooper armor, the HUD was a central focus of the design. However, beyond the quality of information that Mandalorians would have access to, Stormtrooper armor is connected to a central database.

This allows the HUD to display not only details about the battlefield surrounding the Stormtrooper, but complex directives and formations provided by their Galactic superiors.

With a full computer accessible through their HUD, Stormtroopers need a way to access, manipulate and provide information through their HUD system with limited arm movements. Why limited hand movements? With a E blaster rifle in their hands, it's probably difficult to scroll with a mouse on their arm.

Given this shortcoming, Stormtroopers learned to utilize special controls built into the helmets that can be accessed with their mouths. Beyond the quality information that a Stormtrooper has access to through the HUD of their visors, the visors provide other benefits. A Stormtrooper's visor provides the wearer with targeting reticles, adding to the soldier's already legendary marksmanship. This is why Han uses a heavy blaster pistol, why Chewie uses a bowcaster, and the alliance uses blaster rifles and carbines, and why these weapons were made illegal on planets that were ruled by the Empire.

In short, Stormtrooper armor is doing precisely what it was designed to do. Is Stormtrooper armor useless? The EU gives us an answer. Recent Posts See All. Post not marked as liked 4. Heart of the Jedi, buyer beware. Post not marked as liked
