On calling BT the person I spoke to in the UK wasn't aware as I, this had happened as he attempted to reinstate the free evening and weekend call plan. My question to all who read this is, are you aware that free evenings and weekend calls have been discontinued? It's generally preferable to make service changes by phoning , where you can go through your package bit by bit and may even get a better deal.
Listen carefully though as it's still possible for things to slip through unnoticed. It is now a paid for add on. This is no doubt due to most people having a mobile phone with either unlimited "free" calls or at least some sort of an allowance for "free" calls and as a result the landline phone is being used less and less. Broadband packages came with unlimited weekend calls, most people on that plan who used the landline and incurred phone charges were upgraded to My Anytime Calls MAC at a discounted rate that reflected average costs, MAC can be kept during any new broadband renewal.
We stopped using the landline for calls a while back and just used the mobile, PAYG at 3p a minute. We hardly use the phone anyway. Even at that it was touch and go whether it was worth it, how ever we stretched the budget and took the offer.
I think there is an appalling lack of transparency on the part of BT over how existing customers are affected by the new calling plans, how they are changed over to these when they renew, upgrade or regrade and precisely what they will be charged.
It is quite clear to potential new customers investigating the BT site that their contract will be for broadband only and that all calling plans are optional add-ons. These include changing what we define as the evening call period for all types of calls: at the moment from 6pm-6am, but changing to 7pm-7am.
